The Problem

Oracle Management Center is a suite of next-generation integrated monitoring, management, and analytics cloud services for managing IT environments. The platform needed an automated way to manage these large networks of cloud based and on-premise assets; I helped them design this new service, Orchestration.

With the increasing importance of security in enterprises, an additional service, Security was needed to extend the product capabilities to provide threat detection, investigation, and remediation. I helped the security team add this new service to the platform.

In addition, although OMC had a lot of customers, many of them weren’t actively using it and hadn’t set it up. I helped design a more intuitive “out of the box” experience to help new users get up and running.

The Goals

  • Eliminate human errors, decrease complexity and provide automation.

  • Provide a secure environment, identify and address threats quickly, keep environment operational.

  • Increase customer acquisition.

Before / After

These are Before / After screens for the Security Dashboard.

The Before screens were from the previous dashboard design. The After screens show the new SaaS version of the same dashboard. The goal was to make them visual, uncluttered, and focused on the critical information and status.

Data Visualizations

These time of day data visualization iterations were created for comparison across an extensive list of requirements.

The requirements are listed below each visualization along with an analysis of how effectively each visualization met the requirements.

Pain Point: Getting Started

The adoption of the platform by new customers was too slow

Getting started and operational with the services was complex and was creating a barrier to entry.

This task based wizard design based on the three main user goals guided users through the process without being too complex.

Simple Solutions

Here are some of the simple solutions I helped design that were guided by design principles. The designs were consistent with the Oracle design system.

Outcome

  •  The OMC Security design was featured in Larry Ellison’s Keynote at Oracle Open World 2017.

  • A patent US10579167B1 was issued in 2020 for the Orchestration Dot-Matrix UI. The patent added to the intellectual property at Oracle, a goal of executive management.
